First Open-Heart Surgery at Chesapeake Regional Marks New Era in Cardiac Care
On April 30, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center successfully performed its first open-heart surgery, a significant milestone achieved after years of advocacy and legal battles.
This marks the start of a new era for the hospital's cardiovascular services. Dr. Edward Coleman led the bypass procedure using advanced equipment, making Chesapeake Regional the first adult hospital in the region to use such technology. The hospital's journey included overcoming opposition from Sentara Healthcare and securing approval from the Virginia Supreme Court.
This new program allows more Hampton Roads patients to receive crucial cardiac care locally, enhancing their comfort and reducing complications. Several more surgeries are already scheduled, highlighting the community's need for this service.
